The second annual ScholarScripts Spooktacular Halloween Costume Contest concluded on November 4, 2020, raising a total of $17,135 for Team IMPACT. Goodroot sponsors and operates the online costume contest through its nonprofit ScholarScripts. All of the funds raised support Team IMPACT, a nonprofit that believes “no child should be sidelined by sickness” and pairs children with serious illnesses with college athletic teams.
For the second year in a row, 8-year-old cancer survivor Xavier Pereira and his American International College hockey teammates took first place. Their photo, with Xavier as a police officer arresting his Yellow Jacket teammates, raised $3,000 in donations. As winner of the Team IMPACT category and the overall top entry, Xavier will receive a $1,500 prize provided by ScholarScripts. AIC was one of many Team IMPACT teams to enter, including Georgetown baseball and Tufts hockey, which raised $2,917 and $1,038, respectively. (Funds were raised through online votes purchased for $1 each.)
Xavier’s father, Paul Periera, says the young man will add the prize money to his college fund, as he did last year. “We’re so grateful to the whole AIC community and the hockey community in general for coming together to help us win such a competitive contest this year,” says Paul. “The biggest victory is that we raised so much for an organization that has made a significant impact in our lives and the lives of families like ours across the country.”
This year’s total nearly doubles the $8,935 raised in 2019. “It’s great to see that the enthusiasm and generosity was so strong in a year that has been quite difficult for many people,” says Goodroot CEO Mike Waterbury. “We look forward to continuing to expand the difference we’re able to make with the contest next year.”
Mike appeared—in a variety of costumes—on WTNH News 8’s “Good Morning Connecticut,” WFSB Channel 3’s “Better Connecticut,” and the FOX 61 Morning News to promote the contest.
The contest drew entries and votes from across the country. The full 2020 category winners are listed below. Each received a $500 prize provided by Goodroot.
